How to participate and contribute

Get involved

Beyond financial support, many contributors provide immaterial expertise and practical help. This includes sharing photographs and footage for our website and outreach, providing technology licences or know-how, mentoring students, or volunteering to coordinate sub-projects. Such contributions are often decisive: they expand our capabilities, accelerate progress and reinforce the collaborative character of Redes Fantasma.

How you can get involved

Supporters play a vital role in helping Redes Fantasma grow, connect, and scale its impact. Through fieldwork, technology, education, and outreach, they contribute to testing, funding, collaboration, and visibility across sectors.

  • Co-organize cleanups: Help us remove ghost gear in coastal areas or support local logistics

  • Test technology: Join our user community, test our tools, and share feedback from the field

  • Support education: Create or run activities, especially with schools, youth groups, or tourism partners

  • Spread the word: Share our mission, build visibility, or invite us to present at your institution

  • Open networks: Introduce us to potential partners, funders, or relevant institutions

  • Share expertise: Support us in development, testing, project design, communication, or governance

  • Public sector support: Municipalities, harbormasters, and agencies like DocaPesca help open doors

  • Enable fieldwork: Support access, permits, and safe conditions for field operations in coastal or port zones

  • Facilitate partnerships: Help align actors across sectors and enable effective cooperation

  • Fund impact: Support specific actions or long-term results, publicly as sponsors or anonymously

You can personally contribute to the design of this website

Good images matter. They shape how people understand the ocean, marine pollution and the work behind real solutions. Instead of relying on generic stock photos, we invite photographers, illustrators, designers and ocean lovers to contribute their perspective.

Better pictures help tell better stories.

Better stories help drive better action.

If you have strong photographs, illustrations or visual stories related to any of the pictures or artwork we show on the Redes Fantasma web page, we would love to use them.

The photos or artwork can revolve around these thematic areas:

  • Ghost nets and marine pollution

  • Field work, diving, beach cleanings, waste disposal

  • Technology in real-world conditions

  • People working for the ocean

  • Sealife and marine nature

You don't get paid with money – but with visibility and credit:

  • Your name is credited on our website on the bottom of your image

  • Your work becomes part of an evolving, international project

  • Selected images may be featured long-term and reused with attribution

This is not a one-off contest. It’s a continuous improvement process. As our work evolves, so can the images that represent it.

Redes Fantasma

About us

Redes Fantasma is an international initiative addressing ghost nets and lost fishing gear through community-led fieldwork and practical technologies. Working with fishers, divers, researchers, NGOs, and coastal communities, and supported by strategic partners across science, civil society, and philanthropy, we develop and test solutions that prevent, detect, recover, and responsibly dispose of lost gear. Our lifecycle approach spans early intervention to long-term impact, with active field labs and networks in Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, and Germany.
